To begin with, I have a word to say to my good friends, the editors, and others who are moved to pity me. Some people are grieved because they imagine I am in the hands of unscrupulous persons who lead me astray and persuade me to espouse unpoplular causes and make me the mouthpiece of their propaganda. We are facing a grave crisis in our national life. The few who profit from the labor of the masses want to organize the workers into an army which will protect the interests of the capitalists. You are urged to add to the heavy burdens you already bear the burden of a larger army and many additional warships. It is in your power to refuse to carry the artillery and the dread-noughts and to shake off some of the burdens, too, such as limousines, steam yachts and country estates. You do not neet to make a great noise about it. With the silence and dignity of creators you can end wars and the system of selfishness and exploitation that causes wars. All you need to do to bring about this stupendous revolution is to straighten up and fold your arms. We are not preparing to defend our country. Even if we were as helpless as Congressman Gardner says we are, we have no enemies foolhardy enough to attempt to invade the United States. The talk about attack from Germany and Japan is absurd. Germany has its hands full and will be busy with its own affairs for some generations after the European war is over. With full control of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, the allies failed to land enough men to defeat the Turks at Gallipoli; and then they failed again to land an army at Salonica in time to check the Bulgarian invasion of Serbia. The conquest of America by water is a nightmare confined exclusively to ignorant persons and members of the Navy League. Yet, everywhere, we hear fear advanced as argument for armament. It reminds me of a fable I read. A certain man found a horseshoe. His neighbor began to weep and because, as he justly pointed out, the man who found the horseshoe might someday find a horse. Having found the shoe, he might shoe him. The neighbor's child might some day go so near the horse's hells as to be kicked, and die. Undoubtedly the two families would quarrel and fight, and several valuable lives would be lost through the finding of the horseshoe. You know the last war we had we quite accidentally picked up some islands in the Pacific Ocean which may some day be the cause of a quarrel between ourselves and Japan. I'd rather drop those islands right now and foret about them than go to war to keep them. Wouldn't you?

Agreement:　主語跟謂語正在人稱、數上的一緻，關係代詞與先止詞的一緻。 Ambiguity:　儘量不来利用能够引发歧義的詞語或句子。 Brief:　文章"簡為貴"，要捉住要點，簡明简要。 Coherence:　文理通順，前後連貫。 Development:　主題的發揮應噹充足、公道、正確。

"疑、達、俗"為正常之標准，而文壆則要求更高，用界的一句話來說即"文壆是一門藝朮"。詩詞，作為文壆作品的最下情势，其愈加困難了，難怪人們皆說："難，詩更難。"在這裏，筆者念對詩詞中最基础的問題--忠實性的問題，發表一點個人见解。
1、忠實性的涵義
忠實性是一切中最根基的指導原則，那麼何為忠實性呢？它是指用一種語言（target language, TL）表達另一種語言(source language, SL)時，连结與原文的對等（equivalence）。
忠實性內涵包括以下兩個面：其一是形式上的忠實（formal correspondence）。它指只從形式上攷慮，為了使表達再現信息（reproduced message）的TL與表達信息的SL形式类似，力图做到詞詞對應，結搆、比方與原作类似。其两是意義上的忠實（equivalence in terms of meaning）。它要求文的思惟內容與原文一緻，在乎義上沒有删刪变动現象。

Mr. President, thank you very much for joining us. Today we're going to sign an important agreement between the United States and our friend, Mongolia. Before we sign the agreement -- which is to codify a Millennium Challenge pact -- I do want to say a couple of things.

First, Laura and I loved our trip to your country. It was most interesting. I still vividly remember the fierce-looking warrior on horseback. And I was reminded of how thankful I am I've never met him on a battlefield. (Laughter.) I remember the skill of the horsemen. I remember the warm hospitality. I remember the yaks milk. (Laughter.) And I remember your gracious and kind words, sir. And I want to thank you again, sir, and the people of your wonderful country for such warm hospitality for Laura and me.

I also want to thank you very much for your strong support in the war against radicals and extremists. After our nation was attacked on September the 11th by cold-blooded murderers, you and your country stood in solidarity with the American people. And since then you have been a stalwart in helping defeat extremists by helping young democracies survive and thrive. And I want to thank you and the Mongolian people for supporting the young democracies in Iraq and Afghanistan. It's been hard work, but we're making progress. And I know it's been hard for some in your society to see the benefits of free societies emerging, but I appreciate your vision and I want to thank your troops. The Mongolian troops are well-trained, well-disciplined, and are a great credit to your country.

CHANCELLOR MERKEL: (As translated.) I would like to say a very warm thanks to you, George, for issuing this invitation to us. Already a first glance of the area shows us that this is, indeed, a wonderful place to be and a wonderful atmosphere. And we have a number of issues that I think we will have now time to discuss later on. I'm' very grateful that we can do this in such a pleasant, such a wonderful atmosphere, and that we can see each other here again. This speech was delivered at a time when the military forces of Germany and Japan enjoyed a series of victories over seemingly weakling democratic nations. By early 1941, the German Reich had spread throughout most of Western Europe, while the Japanese Empire covered vast areas of the South Pacific.

The shocking collapse of noble, civilized nations resulted in a creeping erosion of confidence in the future of democracy. To some observers it appeared that Fascism and militarism might be the wave of the future and that democracy with all its inherent problems was in serious decline.

In his third inaugural speech, President Franklin Roosevelt turned his attention to this growing misconception and attempted to rally Americans, reminding them of their roots and rekindling the spirit of democracy.

Mr. Chief Justice, my friends:

On each national day of inauguration since 1789, the people have renewed their sense of dedication to the United States.
